It's hard to let go and trust that other people will take care of them and nurture them in the way that they need, especially when the structures aren't in place for that. This is something that I struggle with all the time being in the field of nursing. I won't know what happens to my patients when I leave the hospital at the end of the day. In fact, I actually have a quote from Archbishop Oscar Romero (a social justice and peace activist during the El Salvador civil war who was killed)that I hung up in my room. It's framed in a religious context, but I think it applies to nonreligious context also.

"It helps, now and then, to step back and take a long view.

The kingdom is not only beyond our efforts,
it is even beyond our vision.

We accomplish in our lifetime only a tiny fraction
of the magnificent enterprise that is God's work.
Nothing we do is complete, which is a way of saying
that the kingdom always lies beyond us.
No statement says all that could be said.
No prayer fully expresses our faith.
No confession brings perfection.
No pastoral visit brings wholeness.
No program accomplishes the church's mission.
No set of goals and objectives includes everything.

This is what we are about.
WE PLANT SEEDS THAT ONE DAY WILL GROW.
We water seeds already planted,
knowing that they hold future promise.

We lay foundations that will need further development.
We provide yeast that produces far beyond our capabilities.

We cannot do everything, and there is a sense of liberation
in realizing that. This enables us to do something,
and to do it very well. It may be incomplete,
but it is a beginning, a step along the way,
an opportunity for the Lord's grace to enter and do the rest.

We may never see the end results, but that is the difference
between the master builder and the worker.

We are workers, not master builders; ministers, not messiahs.
We are prophets of a future not our ownAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17389184069521330191noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5764965877818536558.post-36391880825886043342013-04-15T14:10:45.952-04:002013-04-15T14:10:45.952-04:00Saying goodbye is hard for professors too. I have really enjoyed the experiences I've had in Jenny's classroom and know that they will continue to impact me long after this C2C experience is over. I can only hope that some of the students we've worked with will carry some of these lessons and conversations with them over the years.
